Tom McCarthy is a legendary figure in Oshawa Generals Franchise History, famously known as The Player Drafted Ahead of Wayne Gretzky. In the 1977 OMJHL Midget Draft, Oshawa General Manager, Sherwood Bassin selected McCarthy First Overall.

McCarthy quickly proved he was worth The Top Pick, developing into a Dominant Scoring Phenom.

Following his Dominant Junior Career, McCarthy and his Agent challenged The National Hockey League’s age restrictions. Their legal pressure forced The NHL to lower it’s draft eligibility age from 20 to 18. This rule change, paved the way for generations of underage stars to enter The League early!!!
