Frankie Goes to Hollywood was an English Pop Band formed in Liverpool in 1980. The group consisted of Holly Johnson, Paul Rutherford, Mark O’Toole, Brian Nash, and Peter Gill. Johnson and Rutherford were among the First Openly Gay Pop Singers and the band often explored themes of Gay Rights and Sexuality in their Music and Performances.
Relax was their Debut Single, released in the United Kingdom by ZTT Records in 1983. Produced by Trevor Horn and featuring the band along with other musicians, it entered the UK Top 75 Singles Chart in November 1983 but didn’t break into the Top 40 until early January 1984. Three weeks later, it hit Number One, replacing Paul McCartney’s, Pipes of Peace.
One of the decade’s Most Controversial and Commercially Successful Records, Relax sold Two Million Copies in the UK alone, ranking among the Ten Biggest Selling Singles in the country. It stayed in the UK Top 40 for 37 Consecutive Weeks, despite being banned by BBC radio stations for its Overtly Sexual Lyrics.
